Description

Canis lupus occidentalis

Here is one of my wolves, I affectionately called December, for some odd reason.  That just seemed to be her name.  Most of the pelts in my specimen collection do not have names, oddly enough.  Anyway, got this pelt from a friend that's a trader, and I really wasn't looking for her over a year ago, but he gave me a deal on her that was literally a steal. She is a prime example for melanism in wolves.

She is a very deep hued black wolf, also commonly known as 'raven black'.   The black mutation in the wolf has been under study by a man named Greg Barsh, who is a renowned geneticist that studies pattern/color variation on an evolutionary level, and has found it being traced back to a gene in the domestic dog genome.  news.stanford.edu/news/2009/fe…
I had the privilege of sitting in on one of his lectures, and getting to chat more about the wolf coloration a few years back.  Needless to say I find his research very interesting.  Check out some of his publications here: med.stanford.edu/profiles/greg… if you'd like to know more.

December's undercoat is charcoal, and she has hints of red in the black itself.  The thing I couldn't resist about this pelt however is that she has a strip of white guard hairs running from her hackles down her back, which if the pelt is flat, you can barely see.  She looks quite different inside versus outside, as you can see in the pics. She is fully mountable, but I've yet to decide if I want her mounted.  I have a white wolf with a black stripe down his back that is also mountable so they would go good together haha
